What to plant in July
July is an excellent month for sowing seeds as both soil and air temperatures are high. Long, warm days with good light levels speed up the germination process, helping you extend the growing season in your vegetable patch and increase your stock of perennials, biennials, and indoor exotics in the ornamental garden cutting patch. However, keep in mind that water levels are low at this time of year and additional watering may be necessary.
In the UK, many flower and vegetable seeds can be sown in July, including biennials such as foxgloves, which will flower the following spring. Fast-growing crops such as radishes, French beans, and carrots can be sown now.
July is a good month to plant young plants grown from seeds in previous months. This is the last month to plant young zucchini, squash, and sweetcorn – plant early in the month for the best chance of harvesting them before the first fall frosts. April and May are the best times to plant winter cabbages grown from seed so they are mature for Christmas and beyond.

Vegetables to Plant in July
Lettuce
Spinach and other salad leaves are a quick and easy crop – sow seeds regularly from March to September for the fresh salad for the better part of a year. Sow seeds in shallow drills or pots. For greens, harvest young leaves from thin seedlings to 30 cm and cuttings and re-emerging varieties.
Carrot
July is considered the last month to sow carrots for fall crops. Sow directly and thinly in shallow drills of well-prepared soil or in pots with soil-based compost. To prevent carrot flies, try to avoid thin seedlings.
Turnips
Often forgotten, turnips can give you two harvests from one plant - the tender sweet taproot can be eaten as leaves or 'greens'. Turnips do not store well, so eat immediately after harvest. For a tasty winter crop, sow directly in shallow drills.

Radish
Quick-maturing, easy to grow, and virtually pest-free, radishes add a burst of pepper to salads. Can also be grown as a companion plant to other crops.
Dwarf French Beans
As with carrots, July is the last month to plant French beans to allow the pods to mature before the first fall frost. Plant dwarf varieties in the ground or in pots and water wells.
Winter Cabbage
This is the best time to plant winter cabbages, so they have plenty of time to mature before temperatures drop in the fall. Plant 45cm apart, leaving 60cm between rows. Soften and water well. You may need to use netting to protect your cabbage from cabbage white caterpillars and pigeons.

Flowers should be planted in July
Delphiniums
July is the last month to plant these cottage garden vines for flowers next summer. Many single-flowered delphiniums are excellent bee plants.
Strelitzia
Want to plant something a little different? Strelitzias (bird of paradise) are vibrant perennials for greenhouses or houseplants and can be sown throughout the summer months. Spectacular flowers also make beautiful cut flowers.

Forget-me-not
Forget-me-not (Myosotis) can be sown from May to September, mimicking the natural process of seed dispersal and germination. Then sprinkle the seeds at intervals in flowerpots or seed trays for planting.
Pansies
By planting pansies now, you'll give them plenty of time to grow before planting in the fall, before they bloom. Sow early in the month for spring flowers.
