4 Colorful New Home Plants You Need To Brighten Your Home

In the lush, indoor forest, I like to get away from it, especially when the winter wind starts to blow. But a real forest is not monochromatic, so I like to mix my home plant colors a bit. The use of different shades, textures, and patterns is important outside of a fantastic garden design, and indoor gardens play by the same rules. A little kick in the right place will turn the color “amazing” into “attractive” seconds.

Here are five new types of houseplants that can make a statement on their own, or provide a variation that our eyes naturally look for in a group of all green or light contrasting houseplants.

1. Aglonoma 'Golden Fluoride'

Aglaonema, also known as Chinese evergreen, offers incredible green color in an easy-to-maintain package, and 'Golden Fluoride' is one of the best new varieties. Yellows, greens, and whites are glossy foliage, with a beautiful blush of rose-red in the center of each leaf. Aglonoma can handle dry air indoors while providing practically beautiful color in any room of your home.

It is best to grow this forest underground plant in indirect light away from temperature fluctuations of windows and openings. Water on the west side, but do not let it sit with wet feet (empty the saucer after pouring the water). Busy life? Don’t worry, Aglonoma can tolerate occasional drying.

2. Neoregelia 'Guacamole'

If you have not yet grown bromeliads, especially Neoregelia 'Guacamole', I urge you to do so first. The color variation is unreal, the form is architectural, and the attention is minimal. ‘Guacamole’ is one of my favorites. It is a small house neo with rough, curved yellow-green leaves that have intense burgundy stripes. It is perfect for displaying several items in a tub individually in clusters or minimalist shelves.

Inside, neoregelia appreciates plenty of light to keep that color strong. They prefer moist environments, and a pebble plate is an attractive solution. As for water, they provide their own cup at the center of the leaves. Fill it up every week, pour in some old water first, and drop a little into the soil to keep your neo happy.

3. Philodendron ‘Birkin’

From Costa Farms' Trending Tropicals collection, 'Birkin' is a stunning new philodendron whose creamy, almost variant appears almost white because it sheds large thorn-striped leaves on a steep plant. The variety of each individual leaf is dramatically different and enhances its attractiveness. White may not be technically a color, but the variation is so unusual, and so strong, it sounds like a wire under me.

Care can not be easy: bright indirect light and water on the dry side. Find this precious water and, unfortunately, you will be hunting for an alternative.

4. Croton 'Harvest Moon' plants

New enough for you to not find for sale until next spring, ‘Harvest Moon’ is an amazing dragon fragrance that won the 2020 Cool New Products Award at the Tropical Plant International Exhibition in January. This is something that can be displayed on a stand in your dull corner because it can handle low light levels indicating those dark places. There, with an architectural presence to the room, the golden, striped leaves are deep green with double ends.

Like most dragonflies, you can escape by drying the soil an inch above the water, but do not let the bone dry out. It also appreciates the extra moisture you can provide, which helps keep the leaf tips from drying out and turning brown.
